What every child’s playroom should include
A child’s playroom is their imaginative space. It’s the place where they can learn, experiment, and be as creative as they’d like to be. It’s also the place that will house all of those toys you want to keep contained. In order to make sure the playroom remains a safe and wonderful space for your child’s enjoyment, consider including the following items.
1. Wall Art/Paint
If you choose to paint the walls in your room, that’s a really easy way to set the tone for the rest of the room. You can choose a bright color like yellow or develop a simple palette with cream. When you’re using paint, make sure you choose a flat option because it’s easier to clean. When you’re thinking about a playroom, you’re dealing with kids who get things messy.
If you’re not in love with the idea of painting an entire room, you can opt to paint one wall instead. You can also use wallpaper to make an incredible impact. Add wallpaper to the ceiling for interest as well. Artwork turns a regular room into a personalized space. For a really inexpensive option, visit a thrift store to purchase a few storybooks. Remove the pages from the book, and frame them. Hang the frames around the room for a whimsical effect.
2. Mats & Rugs
Depending on the size of your playroom, you can add one or two large area rugs. Make sure to choose rugs that are easy to clean. Add a few layers of padding to the bottom of each rug in order to provide a soft landing when your child falls or sits down. Playmats are great for any children who want to roll around or try some of the new moves they learned in gymnastics class.
As children develop, reading is such a fundamental part of their experience. Knowing this, it’s a great idea to store all of the books in its own library section of the playroom. Floating shelves are pretty popular. However, it’s a great idea to make sure there’s a bar that keeps all of the books from falling. If you choose to purchase a regular bookcase, properly mount it. If a child bumps into the bookshelf when it’s properly mounted, it won’t fall over on them.
Purchase age-appropriate furniture for your child’s playroom. If they’re still in diapers, it might be convenient to keep a changing table in the room. Purchase a glider in order to remain comfortable when you’re sitting with them or rocking them to sleep. Incorporate other options for children’s furniture such as round tables and chairs for great workspaces. If you know that your child will want to do arts and crafts projects, purchase easels, drawers, and other helpful pieces.
5. Audio/Visual System
While it is very important to monitor your child’s screen time, it’s also great to have various options for your child to enjoy such as music and educational programs. For many children, Sesame Street is a staple for learning the alphabet, colors, and how to respect other cultures. If you’d like to turn on an episode for your child to enjoy for a little while, a flat-screen TV is a great purchase.
If your child loves to dance, turn on the music through your installed stereo system. Your child can also listen to audiobooks and radio stations that are for children. It’s great to have diversity in the methods you use to entertain your children.
It’s wise to have good lighting for multiple reasons. First, you want to make sure your child can see what they’re doing when they’re in the playroom. It’s good to have lighting because it can really set the right ambiance. Whether you choose to install recessed lighting or hang playful chandeliers, great lighting can really add to the vibe and mood of the overall playroom. If you choose to hang sconces or use standing lamps, make sure they’re secured in a way that won’t hurt your child.
When you’re creating the perfect playroom, it’s a great idea to gather inspiration before you get started. Look at magazines, home decor shows, and other sources of inspiration in order to gather your vision. As you work toward creating the perfect playroom, it’s also okay to edit the vision as time progresses. Besides, as long as your child loves it, that’s what is most important.
