How to face everyday challenges
Too much to do – and not enough time to do it? Don’t know where to start….then here is a good time management tip.
Have you heard the joke How do you eat an elephant? …..One bite at a time!
It maybe a kids joke but it also is a good way of approaching day-to-day challenges, when you don’t know where, or how to start.
Elephants and time management
The elephant can take on any form you like it can be a messy house, a work project, moving home, in fact anything which leaves you feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
Another really excellent thing about adopting the Elephant approach is that even young kids respond well to this visual metaphor.
When we look at anything in its entirety it often feels too much to tackle, so we then put off doing the said task, which then adds to the stress. The thing is when you put things off quite often they become even more urgent and also often take up a lot more time.
One bite at a time
But thinking Elephants and one bite at a time, instantly it becomes more manageable. Writing the “bites” down can also lighten the load, and gives us a strategy to follow. It really can help to free up your time.
On a personal level likening the problem to an elephant gives me a sense of perspective and adds humour to the situation.
So next time you are feeling overwhelmed and not quite sure where to start, remember to say to yourself. How do you eat an Elephant? And of course it is one bite at a time.
