Why are bedtime rituals important?
Every parent knows that sometimes it can be a real struggle to get the children to bed, and once they’re in bed, it can be hard to actually get them to sleep. In order to make this whole process easier, it is recommended to set up some bedtime rituals which will be a clue to the child that it’s time to go to sleep, but will also calm them down and prepare them for the night.
Since kids need stability and predictability, having a bedtime routine can make sleep time easier both for the parents and the children. When it comes to toddlers, if they have a set pattern of events every night and they know what’s coming next, it makes them more relaxed and it’s easier for them to fall asleep.
And it’s not only about calming down your child, bedtime rituals can be a really good opportunity for bonding with your child. Not only will a child remember these bedtime rituals as some sort of a memorable experience, but they will provide the child with a sense of security and love.
What’s important when it comes to these routines is to stick to them no matter what. So even if you’re not at home, it’s important that the child goes through the same routine. These rituals can start in whatever room in the house, but it’s important that they finish in the child’s bedroom, in their bed. By setting these rituals properly, the child will see their room as a nice and safe place to sleep.
Routines
These bedtime routines can be whatever you want them to be. And in order for your toddler to have a set routine, it’s a good idea to start doing it while your child is still a baby. The best way for a child to relax is to have a nice relaxing bath, a warm bottle of milk and, of course, to get settled under their favorite cover or comfortable pram blankets that will keep them warm and cozy. It’s also important that your child gets used to washing their teeth as this will then become a healthy habit once they grow up.
If your child isn’t sleepy enough, it’s ok to play a quiet game or to simply chat with them a little; however, never let them get overly excited as this will not help them fall asleep. A great way to calm down your child and make them feel relaxed is of course to read a story or play some relaxing music. The very last part of these bedtime rituals should include some extra cuddles and kisses and saying ‘goodnight’.
While these bedtime rituals are quite important for children, they can also be highly beneficial for their parents, too. Not only does putting the kids to bed on time mean a peaceful night, but it means that the parents can set some time aside for themselves, and everyone knows, this is something that all parents lack.
