Sew much fun: why teach your child to sew
If you are looking for a new bonding activity for you and your child, you should consider choosing sewing. This craft provides them with plenty of benefits and advantages, plus it’s interesting which means they’ll surely enjoy it.
While sewing children learn a lot. They have to focus on the task at hand, to follow instructions how to use the pattern. Their creativity and problem-solving abilities are challenged and enhanced during the process. After some time, they become more patient, focused and organised.
Before you start teaching your kid how to sew, you should first know a few things. So, take a few minutes and take a look at what we have prepared for you.
Start with simple tasks
For starters, you can show them how to sew by hand. Teach them how to make a few basic stitches and connect two pieces of fabric. When they become accustomed to doing that, work on improving their precision. Keeping the line straight, staying close to the edge without going over and making the stitches as small as possible should be a priority.
After that, you can have them do a simple task like stitch their favorite character or animal shape on a napkin. Next try to teach them another easy task like how to make a tiny coin purse without a zipper. As long as you go step by step, they will enjoy the activity and be ready to learn new things.
Give them projects that will be fun for them
Doll clothing, small plush toys, and decorations with their favourite character on them are all great projects for kids. These projects will allow them to improve their skills, but also to create something that they will be using. Just don’t forget to start off easy, with the simplest versions of mentioned items.
Let them choose
Since they are the ones who’ll be sewing, you should let them choose the fabric, the thread, the patterns, and everything else. They probably won’t be good at colour matching, but that’s all right. Let them make colourful wacky things if they wish to – be a cool, fun parent. It will be nice to see their unique creativity at work.
Repetition is crucial for improvement
Practice makes it perfect, so let them do their projects over and over. Each time they complete it, the end result will be better than the previous one. They will also notice their own mistakes and mend them which will help them upgrade their sewing skills.
Now you know everything you need to in order to teach your child how to sew. All that’s left is for you and your kid to enjoy your sewing lessons and have fun.
