What is colloidal silver
Colloidal silver was first created in the 1880’s. In the simplest terminology it is tiny molecular particles of silver and pure water that create an anti viral, anti bacterial and ant-fungal product. Colloidal silver is great product to keep in the medicine cabinet and is not just handy for you but for pets as well. Here you can find out about the history and more details.
How we found out about Colloidal Silver
We have a rescue dog called Mr Darcy – I have referred to him before on Help for Busy Mums. This dog has cost our family a fortune one way and another, from the food he has stolen or the vets bills we have incurred caused by his troublesome itchy ears. But we still love him to bits.
These itchy ears and the yeast infections he develops have been a source of ongoing consternation. Being told about Colloidal silver has been a real discovery in more ways than one.
My source Nina the dog groomer
It was after one particularly troubling trip to the dog groomer prompted by Mr Darcy’s itchy ears that Nina suggested colloidal silver. I had never heard of it and I am rather ashamed to admit that it took several more trips to the dog groomer to remember the name and eventually source this product.
By the way the problem with dogs having itchy ears is that they scratch them because they are itchy which then leads to them becoming infected probably with a fungal/yeast infection.
In my view, although the antibiotics kill the infection they also kill off all the good bacteria which leads to another itchy ear problem within a very short time.
Nina claimed that they used colloidal silver for many skin infections their own dogs had suffered from over the years and had found it an excellent product. Colloidal silver claims to be anti-bacterial, anti fungal and anti-viral. Frankly I though it sounded a bit too good to be true but anything was worth a go.
Ear drops and other products
I have in the past used apple cider vinegar with some success along with a product called Thornit. However I have been worried that this may sting if it is used close to inner bit of the ear. I note from feedback on the Optimised Energetics website that some pet owners use colloidal silver even as ear drops. They also now do their own special pet ear drops for itchy ears using a mixture of colloidal silver and essential oils developed with the help of their veterinary advisor. I have used this on Mr Darcy – who seems to quite like it – as he does not rub his ears or shake his head which he does do with some other products. It also smells nice.
Other ways colloidal silver can be used
But colloidal silver uses does not end there. Optimised Energetics state “In pets, especially cats and dogs, colloidal silver is useful in helping treat inflammation, wounds, fever, eye infections, burns, ringworms, parasites, digestive disorders and yeast infections. Furthermore, you can use colloidal silver for pets to improve their gum health.
You can also use it to wash their eyes and ears.”
My own observation was that Mr Darcy seemed much happier when his ears were cleaned with colloidal silver. This was then borne out by own experience when having had severe problems with my own teeth I took to spraying colloidal silver into my mouth. It did not sting, just felt cool and undoubtedly helped with the healing process.
Even my dentist acknowledged and knew about colloidal silver when I mentioned how I was “self medicating” my tooth ache.
A great addition to your first aid box – for you and your pets
Since then I have become a big fan of colloidal silver as an important addition in our first aid box and have just bought the travel spray for my husband.
(Great for planes and other places where you end up unable to avoid breathing in other peoples germs).
I personally think we will be hearing more about colloidal silver in the fight to combat bacterial infections and virus’s.
