Home made tartlets with savoury or sweet fillings do not need to be difficult and time consuming to make. Try these ideas for quick savoury or sweet tartlets – or make your own yummy alternatives.
You will need:
225g or 8oz of short crust pastry
Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180, Gas Mark 6. On a lightly floured surface roll out the pastry thinly. Make 10 cm (4in) rounds using a pastry cutter and line a 9 tart or Yorkshire pudding tin. The circles need to be larger than the indent of the tin. Prick the bases of each uncooked tart with a fork and press the edges of the pastry of each tartlet with your finger to make it sort of tart shaped. Bake for about 12 minutes until golden and crisp. Allow pastry cases to cool before transferring them to a plate or wire rack and then add the ingredients of your choice. This bit is very important so do not be inpatient.
Savoury tartlets.
Sandwich fillings can make excellent savoury tart fillings. Just buy a tub and put a spoonful in each tartlet. Job done.
Jar of tomato or basil pesto, add a chopped cherry tomato and an olive.
Guyere cheese melted along with a little fresh spinach
A spoonful of goats cheese, philadelphia cheese – and to make it a little more interesting add a small dollup of chutney or relish to each tartlet for a bit of a kick.
Sweet tartlets
Add a scraping of apricot jam and then add fresh fruit or tinned fruit (well drained),and top with double cream.
Alternatively add a little patisserie cream to the pastry tartlet before adding fresh fruit.
Experiment a little and don’t worry if your sweet or savoury tartlets don’t look perfect – it will show that they are home-made.
