DIY Face masks for a mother and daughter night
Every now and then we all need a spa day, or at the very least, a facial mask to cleanse our pores and exfoliate. The process of making and/or applying DIY face masks can be boring and uninteresting, however, so why not do it as a fun mother-daughter activity?
The special bond that is shared between you will allow for an enjoyable experience that you both will be sure to remember years into the future – it may even become one of your traditions. The clean, smooth skin that you get will just be a bonus!
But with so many face mask options on the market, it may be difficult sifting through them all trying to find the perfect one. Instead of spending countless hours searching a recipe or trying to guess the correct measurements, here are some easy instructions to help you get started.
Oatmeal, Honey and Yogurt Face Mask
Oatmeal is a great exfoliant that helps to soak up extra oil so this recipe is great for those with oily skin. The lactic acid in yogurt also helps to gently exfoliate by dissolving dead skin cells to uncover and redeem that natural glow. The final ingredient, honey, is an excellent antibacterial agent.
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/3 cup oatmeal
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons honey
Mix hot water and oatmeal and allow it to settle. This will take about 2-3 minutes.
Once the mixture has settled mix in the remaining ingredients. Apply a thin layer to the face, let it sit for 10-15 minutes then rinse in warm water.
Mayonnaise Face Mask
When thinking of face masks, most rarely think of using mayonnaise. However, this mask is perfect for those with dry skin looking to add and maintain some moisture naturally.
The eggs and oil are the main reason for its ability to moisturize and the vinegar helps to remove dead skin cells.
- 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)
Mix these two ingredients, thoroughly, and add it to the face for 20 minutes. The coconut oil is only necessary for those will extremely dry skin.
Feel free to also add this to parts of the body where you have dry skin (eg. elbows). Rinse your face in tepid water to avoid cooking the mayonnaise. Enjoy that baby soft, moisturized skin.
** If you’re taking the mayo out of the fridge, let it sit for about an hour at room temperature before getting started.
Lemon Face Mask
The components of the mask allow for control of oil secretion, as well as sloughing off dead skin cells and removing excess oil that may cause new breakouts.
- 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt
Combine both ingredients in a small bowl and mix. You may use a hand blender to form a consistent paste.
With a brush, apply the mask on each other and leave on the face for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and immediately apply an oil-free moisturizer.
Charcoal and Clay Mask
Both charcoal and bentonite clay masks have become huge in skin care circles in recent years because of how well they work. Charcoals masks especially, are readily available on the market but sticking with the DIY theme of this article, you can actually create your own. If you do decide to buy a pre-prepared charcoal mask, read reviews first because some brands have extra ingredients that can help or hurt your skin care goals depending on your skin type and what you’re trying to achieve.
In short, both ingredients bind to toxins, bacteria and other impurities on the skin and whisk them away to reveal your smooth, glowing complexion. They just work in different ways so combining them allow you to get the best of both worlds.
- 2 tablespoons of food grade activated charcoal powder
- 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay
Simply mix the charcoal powder and bentonite clay with enough water to make a thick paste and apply to the face. Leave the mask on for 15 mins then wash off and wipe with a warm washcloth.
Use any of these DIY face masks to spend some quality time with your daughter while prolonging and improving the beauty of both of you. The gap time between mask application and removal is an excellent time to have girl talk and the overall experience can turn out to be a memorable one for years to come.
