With all the talks of cutbacks and reducing waste I thought it was about time I did a little research on some money saving tips for busy mums. The thing is when we are busy, we tend to spend more and waste more. If your monthly food bill is £400 per month that is £4800 a year.
If you could reduce that by 10% that is £480 – and just think what you could do with that. So here are some ideas to help you reduce your food and household bills.
- Do a monthly food audit – getting into the habit of checking what food and other household goods you have in the house already before you buy anything else.
- Are there meals you can cobble together with ingredients which need to be used up?
- Make a list. Before you go shopping either on-line or in person. Make a shopping list – and stick to it.
- Downshift on the brands you buy. Buy own label products and definitely avoid the premium brands. By downshifting on brands the average family can save up to £800 a year by following this simple rule.
- Have a menu plan. If that sounds too daunting then have a menu plan for particularly busy days. Deciding what you are going to cook in advance on busy days will stop you spending money on expensive ready meals or succumbing to a takeaway. Having some quick recipe ideas that don’t take much effort up your sleeve will help you save money and time.
- Never purchase more than you need particularly of perishable goods Ignore the BOGOFF, buy one get one free offers). And very importantly only cook what you need to cook. If you have cooked too much use any leftovers for packed lunches or freeze for dinner next week.
- Check your fridge regularly to make sure that anything that is not going to be used before it’s “use by” date is put in the freezer.
- Buy those little luxuries when you do your big shop and when they are gone don’t top them up until your next big shop.
- Reduce the quantity of meat or fish you use in recipes and add in more vegetables.
