Face shape changes you can expect once you turn 40
People change as they age. No one can fight the passage of time. Even though you may lead a healthy lifestyle with an established skin care routine, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly, the changes in your face shape will become more apparent once you hit the 40s. Of course, this doesn’t mean that your world is ending or that you’ll look completely different. It’s just a sign of the normal ageing process. Still, by knowing what to expect, you can focus on the target areas and research the possibilities that these modern times offer when it comes to cosmetic procedures and skin care.
1. The face deflates
As you get further away from your twenties, the good fat that has been keeping your face fresh and plump lessens. This is especially apparent around the cheekbones and jaw line, which suddenly makes your face shape more angular and you tend to appear tired. If you don’t like the sound of this, you can always incorporate facial massages into your daily routine. These can help with keeping the plumpness of your face shape in your 5th decade.
2. Skin starts to sag
Saggy skin is a common issue for people in their 40s. Actually, once you turn 30, collagen levels in your skin start to drop. Together with the loss of the previously mentioned “good fat” in the face, this leads to the well-known phenomenon of saggy skin. Basically, the skin on your face “drops” as it’s pulled down by the gravity. Luckily, there are various face lift procedures available to redeem this particular problem for a while.
3. Welcome to the eye bags
As you may have expected, eyes are also the victim of the ageing process. Actually, eyes may show the first signs of ageing with fine wrinkles around them and slight drooping. But, with the loss of collagen and fat, eyelids tend to drop even more, while the plump area under the eyes turns into eye bags. Aside from using proper skin care for this sensitive area, advanced blepharoplasty procedure is a popular eye-lift solution with almost no surgical impact.
4. The nose transformation
Your nose changes all the time throughout your life, but, as you age it can become bigger, longer and/or appear larger at the tip (almost bulbous). The fact that the nose is made of cartilage and the frequent size change of the glands located in the nose tip are the main culprits of the nose transformation as you age. If a nose job is not your thing, you can always try out fillers.
5. Lips thin out
Just like the rest of your facial features, lips cannot be spared once you turn 40. Due to the mentioned elasticity loss, lips lose their volume. The red part rolls backwards making them appear thinner, while the upper lip lengthens with the minimized appearance of the Cupid’s bow. However, lip volume can be easily fixed with fillers. In the case of upper lip lengthening though, a complete surgical procedure may be necessary.
Healthy diet and exercise, established skin care, smoke-free lifestyle and a happy mood in general can slow down the ageing process even when you hit your 40s. However, the changes in your face shape are imminent. Eye sockets tend to get larger, skin thins out, which brings out the dark circles, eyebrow bone angle decreases and all this contributes to the more visible wrinkles and crow’s feet. That said, do your best to stay positive, fight stress and sleep well. You don’t have to be 40 to realize that time is passing by quickly and even though your face will change over time, your personality can shine more and more.
