The importance of drinking enough water
Everyone knows that water must be regularly consumed, but not everyone knows exactly why we need water to survive. So, if you’re one of those water lovers who have no idea why they drink it, here’s a little explanation for you.
It literally keeps us alive
Around 60% of the human body is made up of water. Our lungs are 83% water, our muscles 79%, brain 73% and even our bones contain more than 30% of this magical substance. That’s why it’s not a big surprise that humans can’t survive for more than a few days without water! We must constantly add fresh water to our bodies and flush out the “dirty” one in order to stay hydrated, healthy and strong.

Aside from keeping us alive directly, water also allows us to move with ease. It lubricates joints and helps effortless and painless movement. Less lubrication provided by water causes more friction in joints that causes pain, injury and even chronic ailments like arthritis. Even our eyes need enough water to move, stay sharp and not cause any discomfort. Also, water in saliva allows us to chew and swallow without pain and it helps food move down to our bellies.
It keeps us clean
Water is also crucial in keeping our bodies clean from different toxins that might collect in our system. Water helps to flush these harmful toxins out of our bodies through perspiration and urination. Constipation issues and bowel movements can also be boosted with proper hydration which means more efficient and regular waste removing. People who are dehydrated often experience toxin buildup which causes many issues like headaches, kidney and liver issues and toxicity.
It keeps us fit
Many people who are trying to lose weight have been encouraged to drink more water. However, water itself doesn’t boost weight loss, but it contains zero calories, unlike other drinks. Also, many people tend to confuse the feeling of thirst with the feeling of hunger, so they end up eating even when they aren’t really hungry. That’s why you should always have plenty of water with you and hydrate before you reach for a snack. Cells that don’t contain enough water tend to shrivel away and cause muscle pain and fatigue. Cell walls with insufficient fluids also don’t work as well and reduce your performance.
It keeps us cool and warm
People can control the temperature of their bodies and prevent overheating with perspiration. The water that comes out of sweat glands covers the skin and creates a cooling effect during hot days and exercise. During the process of water evaporation, the blood is pushed closer to the surface of the body where it’s cooled and returned to the interior. When it’s cold outside, the process is reversed. The water also has a very high heat capacity, which means it can absorb a lot of heat before its temperature rises. This way, water contained in cells protects the human body against fast temperature changes.
It boosts circulation
Water is the key to healthy blood circulation. When a person is well hydrated, the levels of oxygen in the blood are much greater than in dehydrated people. Plus, the more oxygen the blood contains, the more energy the body will utilize and more fat will be burned.
All in all, every process in the human body requires water and proper hydration. So, make sure to create a good habit of keeping yourself watered-up and you’ll have a much better chance of staying healthy, fit and strong for a long time!
