Story Walks and Other Creative Play Ideas
Stuck for ideas as to how to occupy the kids when you go out for a walk or at the beach for the day? Well why not make up a story and create a bit of an adventure. Think Enid Blyton and the Famous Five, or Winnie the Pooh.
Actually it does not need to be as sophisticated as that at all. But by thinking of a your own favourite childhood story, or perhaps your child’s favourite bedtime story you may find a way of creating an imaginary game around your child’s favourite characters.
Kids play make-believe all the time. I remember my own daughters playing “spying” after they had seen the film “Harriet the Spy”.
Giving your children a bit of a steer to get the game going, will help them to create their own imaginary adventure.
So the first thing you must do is to set the scene. You might say something like this to your little brood. ” I have heard on good authority that there are some mysterious goings on at the beach/garden/park, and we have been asked to investigate”.
It might be that Barbie’s jewellery has gone missing, or some other such item which needs to be investigated..
Teddy or a popular doll can take on the personality of super sleuth detective or Prince of the Forest and eventually miraculously find it.
Kids love this stuff – even when they get old enough to know that Mum is cahoots with Teddy. Try it and have some fun.
