Make Sure You Create An Emergency Back up Plan
I have just had the most manic weekend. Great fun but seriously busy. It was my daughter’s 21st birthday party, and in a lapse of parental concentration we were talked into having her party at home. On top of which her younger sister started university this weekend and we had a load of house guests.
Now, I am not the most organised person and it takes a great deal of concentration for me to stay on task to get everything done. Especially when the task covers a variety of different genres of my life.
What I have learnt to my cost is that a back-up plan is a useful resource to have. It does not matter whether the back up plan is for an outdoor party, (like ours), school pick-ups, or you because you are out of time. (Also like us).
It can also be useful for considering more serious events, like redundancy, or financial problems. Putting in place a back up plan will help life run a little more smoothly.
OK, you might say, this is very pessimistic way to manage your life. Well yes it is, if you lie awake at night and worrying about Murphy’s Law hijacking your life.
A back up plan should be about you facing the challenge if X happens. And putting in place systems or planning, which can be filed away and forgot about in case disaster strikes.
Back up plans can come in many shapes and forms and cover many different situations. But generally they require you to sit down and think of possible solutions to potential problems that may arise.
Writing down these solutions down is important because you can then add to them, refine them and may come up with an idea that surprises or even inspires you.
Generally back up plans require you to be flexible, delegate, plan and communicate.
All of which are quite difficult things to do when nerves are frayed and we are feeling under pressure.
Also by considering potential problems, you brain is better programmed to expect the unexpected. It is also a good lesson to teach our kids.
The thing is life does not always go to plan. Having a back up plan will not stop disaster striking, and everything going wrong that possibly could do, but it can help a mole hill not turning into a mountain.
