If we are not careful our own self fulfilling prophesies can define who we are
I genuinely think that lots of us live our lives by our own self fulfilling prophesies which get conveniently wrapped up in our own self belief system – or perhaps it should be described as our own lack of self belief system.
For
example, one of my many dodgy qualities is my scattiness. I always have been scatty ever since I was a little girl. It drove my teachers and my mother mad.
My husband and kids have suffered through my scattiness and even have the audacity to blame me when Murphys Law strikes them. Apparently they have all inherited my scatty genes.
Really it is hardly surprising I am scatty. Everyone has been telling me I am all my life. And what’s more I believed them. And guess what when you believe in something enough you tend to either consciously or subconsciously take actions to confirm what these beliefs.
Now actually I don’t mind being a little bit scatty, What I really don’t like is when the actions I take, lead to great inconvenience or cost, and result in unnecessary stress, (which sadly has happened on numerous occasions),
What I am trying to get to saying here, in a rather round about way, is that just because there is some aspect or yourself you are not happy with, doesn’t mean that you are stuck with it forever. And more than that, with a little perseverance it is not that difficult to change.
It doesn’t matter what you want to change or redefine about yourself. Maybe you want to become more organised, more confident, be a better cook, or dress differently. The list is endless but the steps you need to take “to be who you want to be” are always the same.
• The first step is to identify what you want to change or how you want to redefine yourself.
• Ask yourself, what actions would you need to take to make this happen. Action being the key word here. No action equals no change.
• When you are clear in your mind as to your goal, look at people you know, or maybe someone you identify with, in the media, who exudes this particular quality and copy them.
• On a daily basis think how they would react to your own particular challengesand try to emulate them.
Do this consistently and after a few weeks it will become a habit. You may relapse from time to time but as long as you return to the above steps I promise you will be on your way to becoming who you want to be.
This process has really helped me alot. I am still a bit scatty and occasionally have critical relapses - but I am so much better than I used to be.
So rermember your own self fulfilling prophesies do not have to define who you are.
